Evaluating CD Covers & Websites

The Maccabees

We like the outside covers because there is a lot of colour, the theme is constant and is a good theme, also the photos are good quality and stand out.

They have created an interesting CD inside as it is humorous and the lego heads are quite conceptual but make sense. The band photo is good quality is good quality and the composition is well thought about, however we think that the photo is a bit random as it has nothing lego based or colourful in it to match the rest of the discography.

The CD cover reflects the band's image is kid themed and funny. The cover reflects the band's song title and album name as it is called 'colour it in' and one of the songs is called 'Lego' and the cover has lots of colour and lego on it.

The band promote themselves on the inside cover as it is a picture of all of them.

Multiple bright colours are used to reflect the theme such as: red, purple, green, yellow, blue, orange, pink. This is on their logo, the lego, the toys and the pens.

On the spine of the outside and inside cover is just the band's name and album name.

We like this homepage because it is simple and has everything it needs for the homepage; title of the band, title of the album, links to information about their website, pictures of the band, links to social network sites for the band and a background photo. Also it relates to the CD cover and the band's songs.

The website is similar to the CD cover in the way that it reflects the band's image. The lego portrays them as playful and kid themed and the bright colours show that they are a fun band.

There are pictures of all of the band so the image of themselves are promoted from their website, also there are links to social network sites and this promotes the band through popular sites on the internet.

On the homepage there are links: 'Home...', 'About us...', 'Tour dates...', 'Videos...', 'Competition...'.
There is also the title of the album and the band name. There is some writing that promotes the music video 'Our exclusive new video "LEGO"'.

There are lots of bright colours on this page to make everything stand out, such as: red, pink, purple, blue, green, yellow, orange.

Blur

Overall we like the outside covers the band's name and the songs are clear to see, and also the images are good quality so it looks good. The colours or the front cover are similar to the back cover so this makes the covers fit more.

We like the inside covers because the colours are similar to the outside colours and this shows a theme throughout that makes the discography link together better. The CD is very creative and interesting and it is not too busy and cluttered so it looks effective. Also you can see the whole band on the inside and this is good because you can see what they look like and what their image is.

The CD cover portrays the stereotype of band life as it has a guy smoking against a wall in a street, it has cigarettes on the CD and the band are wearing casual clothes. This reflects the band as a stereotypical band that smoke and who relate to teenagers and young adults more than older people or really young kids. The band are also conveyed as British because there is a British flag on the inside cover and on the CD, and also on the front cover the street looks British with the street sign on the wall at the bottom.

The band are promoted by a picture of them all on the inside cover.

There are limited colours on the CD cover as it creates a theme which is clearly British as the colours used are red, white and blue which are the colours of the British flag. Black and white are also used to go with the British flag colours and to help keep the theme.

There is nothing on the spine of the outside and inside cover, there isn't even a plain colour it is just the background pattern from Photoshop. This doesn't look good as it seems like they have forgotten about the spine and left it blank.

The homepage is good overall as it shows the picture of the band, has the band's name, has good quality photos and has enough information that a viewer would want to see on a band website. We don't like the fact that they have used a similar set up photo to the CD cover as it looks like the creator of the website has just taken a photo from the same photo shoot as the one from the CD cover instead of thinking about a different idea for another photo of the band. They could have either used the same photo as the one in the CD cover or had a completely different photo of the band instead of one that is the same but just has some of the band members' heads slightly different.

The homepage reflects the stereotype of casual band life even further than the CD cover does as it has pictures of alcohol cans and bottles as well as cigarette packets. They are also reflected as British again from the use of the British flag in all of their photos.

The band are promoted from the photo of them all and also there are links to social network sites and merchandise.

On the homepage there are links to more information about the band on other pages, there is the band's name, news updates, a feature to sign up to be a member of the website, a description about their music video, tour dates and information about them, merchandise and also links to win tickets to their concerts.

The colour used are red, white and blue like on the CD cover and also the colours of the alcohol and cigarettes which are brown and gold to contrast with the flag colours.
