Kate Nash - Merry Happy
The video is a performance and narrative with shots of the lyrics translated literally.
The technical and stylistic strengths are that the video has a range of camera shots which interest the audience and also a lot of close-ups to show emotion. They used stop motion which is original and interesting. The different style of having two kids as the actors instead of two teenagers was a good idea.
The main weaknesses were that some shots were repetitive and made it slightly boring for the viewers and also the video had an expected ending as it seemed like they ran out of ideas for their film.
The video meets conventions and expectations of the genre of music and the image of the artist.
We have given this video 30/40 which is a high level 3.
Lazlo Bane - I'm No Superman
The video is a performance and narrative and the lyrics and music related to the video.
The technical and stylistic strengths were that there were lots of shots keeping it interesting and there were a good range of angles to convey different perspectives. The locations and costumes were good and worked well with the narrative. The video overall was interesting the whole way through.
The white balance was wrong, they had bad lighting, the camera had a lot of noise as a result from the bad lighting. Also the performance was out of time; the lip syncing, playing of guitar and drums.
It meets the conventions of the genre of music because of the shot types and the narrative with performance.
We have given it 24/40 which is a low level 3.
Rumble Strips - Hands
This video is a performance and conceptual and had enormous hand props that related with the title of the song making the video unique.
The strengths were the effect such as the jumping into different locations and also how they sped up the shot when the music sped up. The shots were good quality and the idea was funny and the sofa shot at the end when all of the band fell off the bed onto a sofa was clever.
You could tell that the actor was lip-syncing so this could have been improved. Also the video had lots of ideas cramped into it.
The video fits to the genre as it is crazy and humorous, this also fits with the image of the artist.
We have given this 33/40 which is a low level 4.
Crystal Castles - Not In Love
The video is performance and narrative and it fit with the theme of the song.
The strengths were that they had lots of shots and locations, the fast cutting on the chorus looked really professional and clever as it was a unique idea and it fitted with the beats of the music. The effect of reversing the shots made the video better because you can see it is a different take on the song to what would be expected as it makes the audience see that the guy is going back through time. The lip syncing was good too.
The weaknesses were that the girl performing to the camera was a bit random and also she looked uncomfortable. The shots on the chorus were a bit repetitive and would have made the video much more interesting if the shots were all different each time.
It meets the conventions of the genre and image of the artist well as the actor looks like he is a performer and looks comfortable in the scenes.
We have given this video 36/40 which is a mid level 4.
Jenny and Johnny - Switchblade
The video is performance and narrative.
The strengths are that their were multiple shot angles of the performer and his guitar along with the girl playing guitar too, which kept the video interesting. We also liked how in the beginning they used a green screen effect on a picture frame to look like its moving. The lip synching and playing is also accurate and good. We also liked how they used the effect of different parts of the video vertically moving on and off the screen.
The weaknesses were that the video got slightly boring after a while and also that some parts felt uncomfortable for the girl to sing and play. The narrative was also a bit confusing and got boring as well.
It meets the general conventions of a acoustic/indie music video as there are multiple shots and angles of the performer however the narrative was very slow and confusing so that differentiates from a acoustic music video convention as the narratives are usually very strong.
We have given this video a 30/40 which is a high level 3.
Kimya Dawson - The Competition
This video is mostly performance with some narrative added in.
The strengths of this video were that there were many different shot types and the idea was original and interesting. We liked the shot of the camera following the girl on the bike - which was surprisingly very smooth. It was also very humorous with the newspapers hitting the different characters. The lip synching was very good and the different locations was a good way of keeping a viewer interested.
The weaknesses were that some shot types were repeated where they could have added different ones in. They might have added a bit too much bike shots in too, and could have added a few more performance shots of the guitar like they have done at the end - which were very good shots.
For the type of genre and song it does meet the general conventions of an acoustic/indie type video. It has an interesting narrative and lots of performance shots of the performer - which always keeps a viewer interested. The image of the actress used, fits the type of song it is as well.
We have given this music video a 33/40 which is a low level 4.
